Frequently Asked Questions

What days do you have available that I can come and hunt

Our season opens on the third weekend in October and runs until the first week of December.  Although we are a Hunting Preserve and can start as early as September 1st, a majority of the ground we hunt consists of stripped corn fields and these usually are not available to hunt until mid October.  Weekends or weekdays, we can book hunts anytime of the week.

What do I need to bring if I come and hunt?

The items that you need to bring are your gun, shells, one item of blaze orange clothing, and your Iowa hunting license and/or preserve license.
If you plan on staying at the lodge, you will need to bring the items mentioned above  along with any other personal hygiene products. The lodge is located a few miles outside of Laurens, so if there is something that you would need, it is only a short trip to go and get it.

What is a preserve license?
Instead of buying an Iowa hunting license, you can purchase a preserve license to hunt at Smokin' Barrels.  Preserve licenses are only valid to use to hunt on hunting preserves, and are not legal to use on public or any other hunting land.

How much does the preserve license cost and where can I buy one?

The preserve license for resident and non-resident hunters cost $20($7 preserve+$13 habitat fee).  If non-resident customers are planing to only hunt at Smokin Barrels, buying a preserve license is a cheaper alternative than the non-resident state license.  Customers can purchase a preserve license or hunting licenses at Smokin' Barrels when you arrive.

Is there a place available to stay if I come and hunt?
Smokin' Barrels has a lodge available for all of our hunting guests.  You can find out more information about our lodge under the "Lodge" tab at the top left side of this page.

What does the hunting ground consist of?
A large quantity of our hunting ground consist of standing rows of corn fields.  You will also be able to hunt in other food plots and acres of native grass.

Are guest allowed to bring their own dogs?

Yes, your hunting dogs are more than welcome at Smokin' Barrels.  We do ask if you do bring them that they are healthy dogs, and are well behaved.  Smokin' Barrels will provide hunting dogs.

What are the shooting hours?
Our shooting hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

What is the limit of pheasants we can shoot?
We base our hunts on a 8 or 12 bird limit per hunter. Hunters can choose to shoot additional birds for an additional $25 each.

What size of shot do you recommend shooting?
We recommend shooting 4 or 5 shot.  6 shot will work also, but from experience, hunters shooting 4 or 5 shot have more success hitting birds and taking home their limit.

Can other guest or non hunters stay at the hunting lodge?
Yes whether you are a hunter or not, we welcome all guests to our lodge and preserve.

Feel free to contact us as we look forward to answering any other questions you may have!
